Trent Hayward began playing tennis at age 4, and began competing in local competitions less than two years later. By age 8, he began competing in regional tournaments and went on to win the Ohio Valley Region, reached the finals in the U.S.T.A.’s Midwest section (comprised of players representing Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and parts of West Virginia), and was endorsed to the U.S.T.A. National Championships.
Coaching start
As a coach, he began volunteering with the Special Olympics Tennis Team bi-weekly practices at age nine and did so continuously for the next seven years until moving to IMG Academy to train in 2003. He instructed the athletes and competed alongside them in seasonal 'Unified' competitions.

By sophomore year of high school, Trent was established as one of the premiere high-school players in Ohio, and was given the chance to move and train full time at IMG Academy/Bollettieri Academy in Florida. He began training for 5 or more hours daily via practice, physical conditioning, and sports psychology.
After winning tournaments in states around the U.S., he began travelling and competing in international I.T.F. (International Tennis Federation) JR Circuit Tournaments, earning a world ranking by age 16, and began competing in I.T.F. Pro-Circuit Qualifying Tournaments.

Trent was recruited by a number of NCAA Division-I schools, and ultimately decided to accept a scholarship at Northern Arizona University due to the natural beauty that surrounded Flagstaff. As a college competitor, he notched wins against players representing programs such as Gonzaga, Arizona State, Texas Tech, and many more.
